About Gala Guest Speaker Eddie Brown

Apopka Native, Eddie Brown

The second John Land Apopka Community Trust Legacy Gala will be held Thursday, October 24, at The Apopka Community Center/VFW, 519 S. Central Ave., Apopka 32703.

A social hour will be held from 6-7 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. A silent auction will be held during the social hour.

The guest speaker is Apopka native Eddie C. Brown, CFA, CIC. Brown is the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Brown Capital Management, located in Baltimore Maryland, which he started on July 1, 1983. He is chairman of the firm’s board of directors and a member of the Management Committee, the firm’s governing body.

Brown was born in Apopka with an exceptional mind into a loving and supportive family that instilled in him a love of learning, a spirit of self-reliance, and the drive to excel. He was born poor to an unwed mother who was, at 13, a child herself. Despite some of the most challenging social conditions in the 1940s and 1950s, Brown has experienced quite a variety during his 70-plus years. He overcame the odds and became one of the nation’s most respected financial superstars.

He recounts in his book “Beating the Odds – Eddie Brown’s Investing and Life Strategies” how a 12-year-old moonshine runner plying the back roads of Central Florida in a souped-up Ford pick-up, went on to become an electrical engineer and highly regarded IBM technocrat, a vice president and star portfolio manager with T. Rowe Price, a media celebrity, and, finally, head of Brown Capital Management, one of the most successful financial services firms in the U.S.

Brown began his company out of a home office, and within two decades built it into a financial giant that has amassed more than $6 billion.

Howard University and the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, have recognized Eddie Brown as a distinguished alumnus.  The U.S. Secretary of Labor appointed him to the ERISA Advisory Council, where he served a three-year term. He was also a regular panelist for 25 years on the nationally televised “Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser” and was inducted into the program’s hall of fame. There he rose to prominence as the country’s first African-American financial celebrity.

Brown boasts more than 40 years of investment experience, serving as vice president and portfolio manager at T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., for 10 years before starting his own firm in 1983. Brown’s community and philanthropic efforts are extensive. He has become one of the most eminent and trusted leaders in the world of investing.

The 30th anniversary of the Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser provided him with an opportunity to ring the opening New York Stock Exchange bell in 2000. Also, in an inscription, Louis Rukeyser pays homage to Brown Capital Management’s growth at a reasonable price (GARP) investment philosophy.

Brown is married to his wife Silvia and they have two daughters, Tonya and Jennifer.
